Television Production at Jefferson High School

The television studio located in the William Fraser Radio-TV Center.

RADIO-TV CENTER OVERVIEW

The Jefferson High School Television Center includes a closed circuit television facility that consists of a 4-channel system capable of sending programming to practically every classroom in the high school building. Staff members can schedule video playbacks for classroom use via this system. In March of 1989, the Radio-TV Center went on line with Educational Access Channel 5 on Lafayette's Insight Communications cable system. Programming that originates at the high school can be distributed to all school buildings within the corporation and cable homes in the community. In addition to instructional programming for students and inservice programming for staff, the channel can be used for the cablecasting of student-produced programs. Broncho Talk is one of our locally produced programs. Evening and weekend videotape playbacks are accomplished with a computer-controlled automation system. A 10-foot satellite dish with both C and Ku band capabilities is located on the roof of the school and is used for viewing and recording educational and instructional programming, as well as NASA SELECT-TV during NASA space missions. A PrimeStar satellite dish was installed in July of 1998 ( and converted to DirecTV during the 2000-2001 school year) to receive special educational and instructional programming. Students in the Advanced Radio-TV classes work on individual and group production assignments. They also serve on production crews for school and corporation programs that are produced in the studio or on location.

Television students are able to work with 2 Hitachi Z4000 studio cameras, 1 older Hitachi camera, a computer-based teleprompter system, , a Canon XL-1 digital video camera,  1 Canon GL-1 and 2 Canon GL2 digital video cameras, 6 AVIO non-linear edit systems,  3 Applied Magic Sequel non-linear edit systems, a Leitch 32X32 audio/video router, Prodigy video switcher, a Videotek Video Toaster production system, a Videonics and JVC portable video production package including 2 SVHS field cameras, video switcher, and Mackie portable sound system including wireless microphones.
