Angie Lipp Klink, 1977
Dear Broncho Broadcasters,
I'm a writer. And I believe my penchant
for clever words was nurtured at WJEF and more specifically by Bill Fraser.
WJEF was the hub of my high school career
from 1975 to 1977. I read the news off the teletype machine and a program called "Listen
Ladies." I appeared in crazy television "commercials" touting
various goods (like candy bars and t-shirts) sold by school clubs and organizations.
Most of my friends were part of "Radio and TV." And I ended up marrying
a fellow WJEF alumnus, Steve Klink. In 2006, our son will attend Jefferson
High School and have the opportunity to experience the fun and career-building
experience that is WJEF.
I graduated from Purdue University with a degree in communications. After college
I worked for WASK Radio in Lafayette as an advertising copywriter. After the
first of my two sons was born, I became a freelance advertising writer. I write
copy for direct mail, brochures, billboards, greeting cards, radio, TV and
more. I have won more than 20 ADDY Awards from the American Advertising Federation,
including a "Best of Show" Award in 2002.
I am also a columnist. My essays have appeared in the Indianapolis Star, the
Journal and Courier of Lafayette, Indiana, the News-Sentinel of Fort Wayne,
Indiana Preservationist Magazine and more. My work appears in the book Our
Fathers Who Art in Heaven and what they continue to teach us, by Gerry Murak.
My lift-the-flap children's book about the mascot of Purdue University, Purdue
Pete Finds His Hammer, is due out in 2005, published by Mascots for Kids.
On the day of Bill Fraser's funeral in 2004, a column I wrote about him appeared
in the Journal and Courier. I'm attaching the essay here. It tells the story
of my experience at "the old radio ranch" and captures the personality
of the man who had the vision to build WJEF--Mr. William Sites Fraser. I was
incredibly honored when Brian Lamb (founder of C-SPAN and one of Mr. Fraser's
most prized students) quoted from my essay when he spoke at Bill's funeral
service
Thanks for letting me reminisce!
