The station signed on with a regular broadcasting schedule on February 7, 1972. The original call letters were WJJE. The station was the brainchild of teacher/founder Bill Fraser. C-SPAN's Brian Lamb got his start in the RTV program at Jefferson High School. The station is located in the Radio-TV Center at Jefferson High School, 1801 S. 18th Street, Lafayette Indiana. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A computer automation system takes over during after school hours, weekends, and holidays. The station broadcasts all home and away football and boy's/girl's home and away basketball games. Students have special morning shows from 7:00-8:00 AM. The station's music format is OLDIES, with news every hour on the half-hour during school hours. Students enrolled in the Broadcast Media classes are responsible for the daily operation of the station, with students serving in positions from Program Director to news announcers. Fans of the station seem to enjoy the music, the fact there are NO commercials, and the opportunity to hear bright, young high school students learning right on the air. WJEF can also be heard as background music on Insight Communications cable channel 5 during the Lafayette School Corporation's scheduled times. The station's primary music delivery format is compact disc. Mini-discs are also used . Audio from the automation system is in the form of .WAV files, and can be used in jock assist mode. JEFF 92, WJEF will take requests, and tries to honor them as best as we can- call 772-4736. OTHER TIIMELINE INFORMATION Spring 1985- Middle of the Road format is changed to Adult Contemporary. Our technicians have it working again, but a final solution has yet to be applied. Stay tuned for more info! After spending two days troubleshooting the transmitter, our team of crack radio engineers isolated the problem and ordered parts. We should be back to normal by the end of the school day, 9/11/00. With the repair of the transmitter, we accelerated the process to expand the broadcast day, but ran into a major software snafu on October 4. We must take care of this problem before we can resume our expanded broadcast hours.
